Response to recent news coverage

08 Apr 2024

Recent news coverage does not accurately reflect the rigorous safety standards that we have in place, which are independently inspected and highly rated by our regulators. As extremely rare as they are, we deeply regret any death that occurs at our hospitals. Ensuring the safety of our patients is critical and at the heart of everything we do. We are proud of the high-quality personalised care that we deliver to the more than one million patients we see at Spire each year.

Dr Cathy Cale, Medical Director of Spire Healthcare said: Ensuring patients are safe is at the heart of what we do at Spire. We apply the highest level of scrutiny to everything that happens in our hospitals, from our wards up to our board of directors. Spire is independently inspected and 98% of our hospitals are rated ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ by the CQC or equivalent regulators. No healthcare system can prevent things from ever going wrong. On the rare occasions this occurs at Spire, we care, we investigate, apologise, learn lessons, and improve. Spire is an organisation wholly dedicated to caring for our patients, and we completely reject any mischaracterisation that safety is being compromised at Spire”.
