Spire Southampton Hospital's new £2m sports medicine centre opened in the city's Millbrook area in June. It will provide the same level of treatment to all patients that current top level professional athletes access.
At the helm of Perform Southampton will be Dr Mark Wotherspoon , who’s currently the club doctor for Southampton Football Club and medical officer to the England cricket team, and Dr Steve Baynes, who has worked with the Team Sky cycling team.
Perform Southampton, which is a satellite centre of Perform at St George’s Park, will offer a wide range of services. Patients will be able to receive advice on nutrition, psychology, podiatry, physiotherapy and sports science. The new Perform centre will enable the local community to have access to the kind of treatment previously reserved for sports professionals.
The partnership with Spire Southampton Hospital also means that the Perform Centre can provide clinics with respiratory, cardiology and orthopaedic consultants. It will also house Spire Southampton Hospitals out-patient physiotherapy services.
Dr Wotherspoon said the benefits for the community for centre will be wide-ranging.
“Exercise is fast being recognised as medicine and can now be prescribed, just like drugs, for a huge variety of medical conditions, including, arthritis, obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma and other breathing problems and mental health issues,” he said.
“We want to work with individuals, teams, employers and communities to promote healthy activity, injury prevention and management and develop innovative ideas to help get the community active,” added Dr Baynes.
Perform Southampton is due to open in mid May and appointments for treatment are being taken. For further information call 02380 764348 or email Southampton@spireperform.com
